Ben Moor & Joanna neary: BookTalkBookTalkBook
-
I have seen this and it is brilliant. . .
It’s as if Jorge Luis Borges has written a parody of book festival events, a Russian Doll of a show that kaleidoscopes psychedelically into itself and then evaporates.
STEWART LEE
Authors Jenny Nibbingley and Burton Mastrick truly need no introduction.
Their novels have long been secretly well-regarded by those in the know, but rarely bought or read by the general public.
Today's event promises to be an enlightening discussion of such titles as Why Reigate?, Randoms, Hatred of Broccoli, and Only If I Have To.
Tim Timminey will moderate.
Book signing afterwards.
Well, that's the plan anyway.
But when do things go to plan?
BookTalkBookTalkBook combines an absurdist parody of awkward live author events; an exploration of artificial intelligence and the creative process; a Beckettian live theatre experience, and an experiment in the limits of patience regarding card tricks. With jokes.
Funny and wise, imaginative and original; this is a show you can't put down.
Sorry, that was more of an observation than a question.
BookTalkBookTalkBook was a 100% Sell Out at the 2022 Edinburgh Fringe, and has been a hit at bookshops and literary festivals around the UK.
Joanna Neary is a multi-award winning comedian and actor. She produces hilarious character comedy shows in the vein of Vic Reeves and Victoria Wood. Her credits include Darkest Hour, Man Down, and Ideal.
Ben Moor is a Herald Angel Award Winner, and has been writing and performing offbeat solo comedy pieces since 1993. He has appeared in The Queen's Gambit, The IT Crowd, and Knowing Me, Knowing You.

ED Tripp: No Man is an Ireland
-
Edward Tripp combines absurd comedy, slick poetry and hysterically unhinged performances to entertain and disorientate the audience.
An awarding winning poet, comedian and former Bard of Exeter, Edward has brought his unique brand of stand-up poetry to comedy nights and spoken word events across the UK.
“Edward Tripp fires exceptionally written poetry at the audience like bullets made of comedy gold".
Clare Fergusson-Walker, Comedian and Poet
“A prose-soaked comedy assassin who's suit lapels are the only things smoother than his wordplay”
Kev Mud, Comedian and Writer
“Absurd and hysterical stand-up and poetry... a bizarre and enigmatic set that had the audience in stitches.”

Gavin Osborn: Misses and Hits
-
Gavin Osborn is a singer-songwriter with six solo albums under his belt, having spent nearly 20 years touring the UK, Europe and Australia. Familiar to listeners of BBC 6Music and Radio 4 (The Now Show and more), Gavin’s tours and shows include support slots with the likes of Belle & Sebastian, Frank Turner and loads more.
His last album, Scrolling Home, completely sold out. Luckily, that was only because he didn’t order enough and now they are fully available (in CD form) at his live shows, which feature the multi-instrumentalist John Hare (from Nick Parker & The False Alarms) as The Comment Section.
Gavin co-wrote a trilogy of storytelling shows with comedian Daniel Kitson and during lockdown his viral hit ‘Born In The NHS’ was featured on Russell Howard’s Home Time on Sky One.
“a brilliantly accomplished singer-songwriter with touchingly quirky lyrics” – Chortle
“One to watch. Processes his anger into a kind of likeably grumpy bewilderment and uses it to unite his audience. A comfort blanket for post-Brexit alienation. One of the year’s most relatable releases” – The Observer
“Poignant, warm, storytelling that’s not afraid to be both very funny and very sad, and is at its best when it’s both” – Drowned In Sound

I recently had a near death experience. I was on stage at a mental health charity fundraiser and thought the black walls at the side of the stage were made of soft material. I turned to the audience, cheerfully asked “may I?” And then head butted it. Turns out it was solid concrete. The noise my skull made echoed round the room. In that moment, I thought it was game over. I finished my performance and spent the next few days in shock, waiting to die, going over and over it in my head. This show isn’t about that, but it is loosely inspired by it.

Amy Matthews: Commute With The Foxes (Work in Progress)
-
Matthews brings a work in progress version of her latest show to the Exeter Comedy Festival!
A shift in lighting casts new shadows. That song you couldn’t stop playing now hurts when it comes on in Tesco. The smell of your high school maths classroom wallops you round the face decades later in the lobby of a hotel abroad. Do things have a place and how do they change if they find themselves in a new one?
Oh and it asks the really big questions, like, “where are all the frogs?” and, “no, like seriously, where are they?”

Louis Burgess: Definitely Ironically Unnamed Show
-
Award winning musical comedian and online viral sensation Louis Burgess categorically despises hyped-up, gimmicky marketing blurb. So after he achieved OVER 50 MILLION VIEWS ONLINE, he vowed to never lower himself to such tactics to sell tickets.
This is definitely why perpetual underachiever and professional procrastinator Louis Burgess, AS SEEN ON ITV, decided that, in order to “bring down the system”, his show would be officially, and totally ironically, without a name, and not (as rumours have it) because he couldn’t think of one in time for the festival programme deadline.
Expect a show that avoids all cheap gimmicks such as meta postmodernism & mentioning his ADHD to appeal to the neurodivergent buzzword culture and instead delivers classic comedy values such as rap songs, contrived hyperactivity, gratuitous profanity and sound effects.
"Yes it's a show about life, fleeting mild fame, music, mental health, frustration, inability to meet deadlines. It's about all of that and more. But mainly it's about literally nothing at all."
- Louis Burgess

***THIS IS A WORK IN PROGRESS****
Hi I've been in London for the last 10 months so i'm obviously very cultured now. This show will be all of my cultural findings.
I am keeping this loose because I don't know what the show will be (a good idea)
In August, will be leaving Devon forever (a bad idea, and I think it's time to say goodbye.)
Expect an ode to Exeter (NOT SENTIMENTAL) and an auction of my things (because i only have space for one ornate cat vase in my shoebox-sized home in Islington*)
*Context for the reader: Islington is a very nice and expensive place in north london where I will live, just in case you are unfamiliar with London (because you live in Devon).

“An eccentric, eclectic night that encompasses all that is good and wonderful about the London comedy scene” - Elf Lyons
“Corpsing might be the best idea for a comedy night ever. It’s unlike anything else on the comedy scene. I killed and I will kill again.” - Luke Rollason

Worst poet wins
-
Running time: 90 minutes
Join us for a night of brilliant comedy & truly terrible poetry.
Spork! Poetry & Edward Tripp are teaming up to present another Worst Poet Wins; a poetry slam competition where only the very worst will win.
Prepare to be amused, revolted and bored, as eight comedians and poets perform their most stupid, cringe-worthy & pretentious poems, in a bid to find the crappest poet of all time. Featuring some special guests, including the Bard of Exeter and Worst Poet Champion Ceri Baker, and a headline set from surreal stand-up poet and judge, Edward Tripp.
Edward Tripp is an award-winning stand-up poet, with a penchant for all things dark and surreal. A frequent performer on comedy and poetry stages alike, he’s taken his work around the UK from A Press of Suspects to Milk Poetry, to WOMAD Festival. Whether screaming about spatulas or soliloquising about Uncle Connor “who isn’t in the IRA,” Ed’s an always hilarious, prop-heavy and provocative performer.

mike Wozniak: Work in Progress
-
Mike is at the early stages of building up a new stand-up show so it's worth knowing this hour will very much be at the work-in-progress end of the spectrum. Whether or not it will even technically qualify as "stand-up" or "a show" remains to be seen but we can at least guarantee that Mike will be on stage, talking a bit and largely facing the right direction. Bonus warning: strong chance the show could be quite a long story about a bench.

COMEDY CLUB 4 KIDS
-
COMEDY / FAMILY / VARIETY / COMPILATION
Since 2005, the Comedy Club 4 Kids has been getting the best stand-ups, sketch acts and cabaret stars from the international circuit to do their thing for an audience of children (aged 6+) and their families… but without the rude bits!
Almost 20 years later, the company has expanded from one London residency to being countrywide, running shows and workshops all over the UK from Peebles to Portsmouth, even producing a book on how to write and perform stand-up, and hosting our own Radio Nonsense podcast to bring the siillies to families all over the world.
The show is family friendly, but without any patronising idiocy. In fact, it’s just like a normal comedy club, but it’s on in the day, kids are allowed in, and thus there is a higher than usual chance of the entire audience claiming to be called Bob.
Adults to sit with children in their party (and help explain anything they get stuck on). Group bookings to contain at least one adult for every three kids. There will be audience participation.
HOSTED AT ALIBI’S CENTRE FOR THE IMAGINATION (EX4 1EJ).
